Colts Neck Reformed Church helped launch New Destinies 4 Kidz, Inc. (ND4K) a 501(c) 3 nonprofit empowering children of incarcerated parents to choose their own destiny, by providing leadership skills and peer mentoring in a nurturing environment. The heart of the program is a free one-week one sleep-away camping experience with a 1:1 ratio of counselors to campers, creating intensive interpersonal development and role modeling, with follow-up activities throughout the year such as bowling, picnics and a Christmas party, to sustain camper/mentor relationships.
Children can attend beginning in the fourth grade, through high school. Each camper is paired with a volunteer teen counselor. We currently have children from Ocean, Middlesex and Monmouth Counties in our program. They are identified through Angel Tree, a prison ministry program, which forwards a listing of eligible children to ND4K. 2014 camp served 19 children.
Federal statistics as of 2013 indicate there are approximately 7.5 million children in the USA with a parent in prison. Tragically, 82% of these children will also enter the prison system. We want to break that vicious cycle and help children in peril learn coping skills.
Expense of the program is offset by the invaluable outcome. ND4K raises all the money to cover camp fees, insurance fees, supplies for camp and ongoing activities, sports equipment and materials, transportation costs, and honorarium costs for motivational speakers for the children. We also have fundraising costs for business cards and flyers, website and post office box. . We do not have any paid staff, office facility, or associated costs.
