Rainbow Children’s Choir

Rainbow Children’s Choir is open to all children in grades 3 to 6 in the city of New Brunswick. The mission of the Rainbow Choir is to help children of New Brunswick grow in community by singing the songs of their diverse heritages. Now in its third year, the choir performs three times a year, to celebrate Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Earth Day. The community comes together around these performances of repertoire promoting tolerance and brotherly love. The choir supplements the children’s music education by giving them an opportunity that the public schools cannot provide: a city-wide choral organization for children.

Rainbow_Choir1The children meet twice before each performance for a two-hour rehearsal, growing together in good posture, breath technique, resonance, and interpretation, gaining emotional and intellectual understanding of the music and lyrics. The children learn to sing solfège, follow Kodály hand-signs, and sight-read music.

Location of the concerts rotates throughout the city, adding to the richness of the children’s experience by allowing them to perform in various houses of worship and see many different faiths.

First Reformed Church provides performing and rehearsal spaces and the use of its music library. The choir requires financial resources to buy sheet music, fund bus transportation, furnish snacks during rehearsal, and print programs and flyers announcing each concert, so the singers’ families do not have to bear any burden of cost.

The choir’s director is responsible for outreach and recruitment, hiring support staff, planning and leading rehearsal, contacting parents, preparing materials for concerts, and directing the performers. An aide assists the director with managing the children during the two rehearsals and the performance of each concert. At present the director and aide work on a volunteer basis. In the  future the choir wishes to raise enough money to pay the director a  salary of $800 dollar for the year, and the aide a stipend of $60 dollars per concert.

The Rainbow Choir seeks to meet its expenses through contributions from local benefactors and by inviting donations at the concerts. The choir is based at First Reformed Church. Please send contributions to Rainbow Children’s Choir,  First Reformed Church, 9 Bayard Street, New Brunswick, NJ 08901
