Churches Accomplishing Long-term Recovery (CALTR)

CHURCHES ACCOMPLISHING LONG TERM RECOVERY (CALTR) rehabilitates homes along the New Jersey shore that were devastated by Hurricane Sandy  in Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean Counties by mobilizing the potential of volunteers, and utilizing skilled volunteers to mentor local unemployed volunteers at the work-site.

We work with week-long volunteer groups, local individuals and community groups, and skilled tradespeople to repair homes and a provide warm, safe, and functional place for homeowners and their families.


  • CALTR has rehabilitated more than 150 Sandy-damaged homes.
  • CALTR has hosted over 70 work groups from 9 states and Ontario.
  • Over 1,000 volunteers have participated in week-long work trips alongside 930 local volunteers.
  • CALTR has leveraged $189,000 in cash donations from around the country to purchase building supplies and food for volunteers.
  • CALTR has received over $122,000 in program grants.
  • In 2015 alone, CALTR hosted 271 week-long volunteers in 18 groups from across the U.S. and Canada.
  • In 2015, CALTR mentored 37 local unemployed volunteers in job skills at shore worksites.
  • In 2015, CALTR provided homeowners with 9,366 total volunteer hours.
  • In 2015, CALTR saved homeowners $136,626 on labor and materials for home repair.
