CUP Food Pantry

CUP stands for Churches United For People. Started in 1987, it is a joint ministry of several churches: St. Peters Episcopal Church, Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Spotswood Reformed Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, Christ Memorial Lutheran Church and Spotswood Chapel.

Anyone you lives in Spotswood, East Brunswick, Helmetta or Jamesburg can visit the CUP food pantry once a month to receive 2 bags of groceries of their choosing, (and a $5 ShopRite gift card when available). Due to harsh economic conditions, the pantry has been serving about 217 families per month. This is a significant increase from 40 families just 5 years ago. In special circumstances (such as Hurricane Sandy) families from other communities are given access to the food pantry

CUP provides valuable assistance to families who would not otherwise be able to feed their households. Currently the 217 families served each month total 558 people (176 children, 382 adults).

To qualify they must show proof of address (usually a driver’s license) showing they live in a town that is served by the food pantry. No proof of income is required, and there is no enrollment fee.

Food for the pantry is donated by the members of the six churches, and by the Hillside Community Food Bank, and by M.C Foods in North Brunswick, NJ

The Pantry is volunteer run. Volunteers come from the churches in the Spotswood area. Operation of the pantry requires 24 volunteers per week, scheduled on a rotating basis. Presently there are 48 volunteers. The Pantry has no paid staff.

Originally housed at Woodmere Senior Housing Development in Spotswood, CUP moved on May 1st, 2012 to the annex of the Spotswood Reformed Church, at 455 Main St. Spotswood, NJ. CUP pays Spotswood Reformed Church a nominal rent of $100 a month towards the cost of its operation. All utilities are paid by the Spotswood Reformed Church as a contribution to support the food pantry.

Spotswood Reformed Church is undertaking to raise money for needed improvements to the annex building so that CUP Food Pantry will have a better facility. The building needs a new roof, furnace and boiler, as well as repaving of the parking lot, Watch this space for updates to the fund raising goal, timeline, and progress on this project, including upcoming fund raising events and ways you can get involved to make this effort successful for the long term benefit of CUP Food Pantry.
